Narikuravar education and welfare society
Narikuravar education and welfare society (Registration No 108/90) has been working since 1990 for Narikuravar tribal community in Tamilnadu, India to develop them in education and social economic condition. The organization was founded by Late. Mr. Mahendiran Suppai who work tirelessly for development of Narikuravar community education from a remote hamlet of Devaryaneri, Tiruchirappalli district of Tamilnadu, India.
The Narikuravar community has an estimated population of 80000 and the people divided in small groups and spread all over Tamilnadu. They live on outskirt of cities in deplorable housing and unhygienic condition. They are traditionally Hunters; they hunt animals for food and collecting herbs for medicine from forests. But the Wild life Protection Act has prevented them from entering the forest. As a result, they have chosen alternative occupations of beaded ornaments making & selling, imitation jewellery, home Essentials and women Essentials products like soap boxes, powder boxes, safety pin face Mirrors etc selling at the bus stands, railway station and payments carry the products in head and shoulders. The Narikuravar community also referred as Narikoravar, Narikoravan, Kurvikaran in scheduled tribe list of Tamilnadu by the recent policy change in parliament.
They are quite backward in terms of education and social economic level. Narikuravar families have limited income and children are malnourished. The children have become School drop-outs due to the parent migration for livelihood. Our organisation addressing these issues by establishing or assisting residential Schools as well as encouraging children to continue their studies. The schools provide them with education, food, nutrition and care.
Our organization also focuses on health, disaster relief actions, women’s empowerment activities, livelihood programmes, encouraging alternative occupations, skill training initiatives for community empowerment. Earlier, the Narikuravar Education and Welfare Society (NEWS) have worked with give india, CRY, skill share International, Oxfam,Ekam to improve the community in various ways with positive outcomes.
The organization goal is to promote happiness and prosperity to the Narikuravar community’s children, women, adults, and elderly people.
